Mini Highland Colors

Mini Highland coat color is determined by genetics, but appearance can change as calves mature, shed, and develop their adult coat.
Use the predictor below to explore likely calf color outcomes based on the sire and dam’s genetics.  If you’re new to Mini Highlands and want a broader overview of breed traits, size, and care, visit our Mini Highland Cattle Information page.

How to Use the Calf Color Predictor

Select the sire and dam alleles (MC1R / Extension and PMEL17 / Dun Dilution).
Review the Most Likely Outcome and probability table.
Use this as a guide — confirm important genetics with DNA testing.

Important Limitations

This predictor estimates probabilities based on selected alleles. Real-world appearance can vary due to coat length, seasonal shedding, lighting, and age.

Why Calf Color Can Change Over Time

Many Mini Highland calves change shade as they grow. Seasonal shedding, longer adult coat length, sun exposure, and overall coat condition can all affect how color presents.
Early predictions help estimate possible outcomes, but final color is best evaluated once the adult coat has fully developed.

Common Mini Highland Coat Colors

Black

Black Mini Highlands carry a dominant black base coat. Depending on genetics, coat condition, and seasonal shedding, black animals may appear jet black, charcoal, or slightly sun-faded. Calves often appear lighter and even blonde highlights at birth, with tone and texture becoming more defined as the adult coat develops.

Red

Red is one of the most common Mini Highland coat colors, ranging from deep mahogany to lighter ginger tones. Shade intensity can vary based on genetics and age, with many calves appearing lighter before deepening as the adult coat grows in. Seasonal shedding can temporarily affect color depth.

Dun

Dun Mini Highlands display a diluted coat caused by specific dilution genes. This coloration can appear smoky brown, gray, or silver-toned depending on genetic expression. Dun coats often change noticeably as calves mature, with adult coats showing more uniform tone and texture.

Yellow

Yellow Mini Highlands typically appear lighter as calves and may deepen or soften in tone as their adult coat develops. Shades can range from pale cream to warm golden hues. Seasonal coat changes and adult hair length can influence how light or rich the color appears throughout the year.

White

White Mini Highlands range from bright white to off-white or cream tones. Coat appearance can shift with age and seasonal shedding, and some animals may show subtle shading or variation as the adult coat replaces the calf coat.

Silver

Silver Mini Highlands show light gray to silver-white coats influenced by dilution genetics. Calves often appear lighter early, with texture and tonal variation developing as they mature. Seasonal coat changes can create visible shifts between brighter silver and softer gray tones.  Calves bred for predictable coat traits are often selected carefully at breeding time. Important Notes on Mini Highland Coat Color

This tool estimates outcomes based on selected alleles. Real-world appearance can vary due to coat length, seasonal shedding, lighting, and age. When making breeding decisions or selling genetics-focused calves, confirm color genes with a DNA test and use this calculator as a probability guide, not a guarantee.  For real-world examples of mature Mini Highland coat colors, visit our Mini Highland Cattle Herd page.
